Treasure Chest
Nathaniel came down for a visit on Friday to make sure I was okay. He went to the doctor's office with me, and stayed by my side most of the day. He'd give the visiting nurses a run for their money if he could only drive.
I found a bucket of old toys down cellar and brought them up to my room. Army men, cowboys and Indians, football men, superheros, dinosaurs, hot wheels, farm animals, Legos and an old dog bone. Truffle uncovered the bone and retreated to the corner as if with a vintage bottle of wine. Nathaniel dug up Batman and Captain America and battled a two-headed Joker for a half-an-hour.
I put my leg up and watched in awe as 20 years evaporated before my eyes. My own kids fought the same villains. The good guys won back then as well.
