Cheap Seats

I love minor league baseball. Most of the players are young men, boys really, who have made it to the doorstep of the Big Leagues. The boys play for peanuts, give it their all every game, and dream of a phone call from the parent club every night.

Ticket prices have gone up this year for premium seating at our local stadium. Seats behind the dugout are now $12. That's still $2,488 less than the same seat at Yankee Stadium though, so you'll hear no complaints from me. Besides, general admission tickets are only $5 if you don't mind sitting on a metal bench.

Last night I saw a very competitive game between the 2 Connecticut AA teams, the New Britain Rock Cats and Norwich Defenders. The Defenders won 4-2, but the Rock Cats had their chances down the stretch. I really enjoyed watching Rock Cats 1st baseman Whitney Robbins - smooth swing with a little pop. He was 3-3 last night with a big blast over the wall in right center. It'll be interesting to see if he ever gets to wear the Twins uniform.

I also witnessed the Dunkin Donuts base running contest where a stuffed chocolate donut nipped a cup of decaf coffee at the finish line. Two innings later a tube of toothpaste lost a foot race to a 10 year old fan. Along with a $3.00 hot dog, these are all things you won't see at a Yankees' game no matter how much you pay for a ticket.

I can't wait for a doubleheader.
