Newsworthy

In last week's local election, Julie just missed out on a Town Council seat.  While not on the ballot, not knowing anything about the majority of candidates, I gave her a write-in vote.  Okay, one vote doesn't get you elected, but Juls will forever be in the Vernon voting annals.

With the demise of the newspaper, voting for local officials is a difficult proposition.  You can surf the internet for Barrack Obama and everything he stands for, but try Googling a candidate for the Board of Education and you're likely to get a phone number and a map to their house.  Each of the major parties had a website listing the candidates with a photo and a short bio consisting of occupation, education and Little League team affiliation, but nothing on the issues.

This isn't a problem for a Democrat or Republican because they can always pull the party lever, but for an Independent?  Well, technically we need to know the issues and the candidate so we can make the best choice.  This isn't working for me;  I might look around for a party affiliation.  Is the Bull Moose Party still in existence?

Beside Julie, I voted for 3 people that I knew despite having no idea what they stand for and 1 guy I didn't know campaigning outside the polling place who told me what he stands for.  The know nothings won and the guy with all the answers lost.  Go figure.
